My Crusade: Hypothyroidism

Do not confuse my bad days as a sign of weakness.  Those are actually the days I am fighting my hardest.

Instead of obsessing over the things you can’t change, focus on what you CAN:  Your attitude, mindset, and energy.

I am making it a crusade of mine to get people who suffer from depression and anxiety to get their thyroid checked.   I also recently read that bipolar might be thyroid related.

“You’re not on antidepressants?

I was asked that question today.

Today was a beautiful day.  I got to spend my afternoon with some wonderful people.

I met with some friends at the home of one of them.  We were supposed to watch a movie on DVD, but that did not work out, so we sat around talking and eating pizza.

We all belong to the same one or two mental health Meetup groups, and have been getting together outside of the meetings to do fun things.

By the way,  if you, who find this blog,  live in the Phoenix/Scottsdale or surrounding area and suffer from mental illness, please join Meetup.com, and join one or both of these groups, Mental Health Matters Support Group and Come As You Are:  Your Mental Health Matters.

We talked of many things, one of which being the meds some of us are taking.  I said that I hated taking pills because my dad was addicted to prescription meds,  and that I was only on two meds for blood pressure and two meds for hypothyroidism.  One woman asked, “You aren’t on antidepressants?”

My answer at the time was no,  but I have reconsidered my answer.  I might not be on typical antidepressants, but without them,  I have no doubt I would still be suicidal, sleeping my weekends away, isolating, lonely, etc.

So,  I am not going to list every medical test here, but you can go to the Stop the  Thyroid Madness website, or you can buy the book at my Amazon store.  I am not on the  NDT (natural dedicated thyroid), but I am on both T4 and T3 meds,  which seem to work better for me.  But I do follow other suggestions from the book.

Maybe being hypothyroid isn’t the answer to your depression and anxiety.

But I feel it is definitely worth looking into.  Maybe you can’t totally get off antidepressants and anti-anxiety meds, but maybe you can lower your dose.   I know I hated the dry mouth and constipation.

My thyroid meds haven’t solved everything.  I still have bad days, where I get depressed and anxious, but  not bad weeks,  months,  years…

I am still lazy and would rather read than clean my apartment, but at least I have a lot more energy to clean or cook,  etc.   I still get in bad moods.  I still get angry at life.   I still get insomnia (like tonight).

But now I can see the sun shining through the clouds.

Now I am  trying to add in diet,  vitamins, exercise. etc.

So please keep on checking out my blog,  while we heal together.
